Huntingon 101
Huntington is a well-established, commuter-friendly neighborhood located just south of the City of Alexandria in Fairfax County. Though outside city limits, it enjoys an Alexandria address and quick access to Old Town, Washington, D.C., and the broader metro region.
Developed primarily in the late 1940s and post-World War II era, Huntington began as a community of modest single-family and duplex homes. Over time, it has evolved into a diverse residential area featuring townhomes, condominiums, and high-rise apartments, reflecting decades of growth and reinvestment. The neighborhood is anchored by the Huntington Metro Station (Yellow Line), making it especially attractive to commuters. Major roadways including Route 1 and I-495 further enhance connectivity.

Huntington takes its name from nearby Hunting Creek, and its proximity to waterways led to historic flooding concerns—now addressed by the Huntington Levee, which also provides walking and biking trails.
Today, Huntington offers a blend of affordability, accessibility, and community amenities, including parks, a community center, and nearby shopping. With its mix of housing options and strong transportation links, Huntington continues to be a practical and appealing place to live in the Alexandria area.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) holds a strong reputation as a top-tier, highly-rated district in Virginia, recognized for academic excellence and diverse, well-resourced schools. It is considered a premier district in the Washington, D.C. area, with many high schools and elementary schools ranked among the best in the state. FCPS has several resources on their website.

FCPS uses the "pyramid boundary model," which is a structural organization where several elementary schools feed into specific middle schools, which in turn feed into one high school. It defines a geographic boundary for student attendance and school alignment. Huntington falls within Region 3's Edison pyramid, which includes the following schools:

Additionally, FCPS also runs the the Advanced Academic Program (AAP), which provides "comprehensive, multi-level continuum of services (K-12) designed to challenge advanced learners through higher-level thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making." You can find out more about the AAP here. AAP centers are available for grades 3-8 at the following schools:
